That's a lot of mares!

Last Friday was a stupendous day, weather-wise! As I drove home from town, I couldn't help noticing the lovely sky with all its mare's tail clouds. I don't think I've ever seen so many "tails" at one time before. I of course had to grab the camera as soon as I got home. Here's the sky as it looked from right to left. Those mares must've been having a lot of fun, frisking about!

I took the pics with the intention of putting them together in a panorama, so I tried to keep the camera at the same level for each one. Apparently I didn't do so well. :)  But here's the panorama as it went together. At least the program did a nice job of blending them! Be sure to click on this one to enlarge it!

Weirdness in the sky

This is a view I saw in the sky on Tuesday afternoon. I've enhanced the photo a bit so it shows up better. I think it was a jet stream, but have you ever seen one shaped like that before? There must've been some strange winds up there to break it apart like that! It looks like a row of arrows pointing down.

That black dot is a bird... much closer to earth than the jet stream.

"Yellow sky at night....

.... means we lucked out, right?" Isn't that the way that old saying goes? Okay, so it isn't. But that's how it happened here last night. The forecast originally called for possible stormy weather with 1 to 2 inches of rain... neither of which we needed!

It was close to 9:00 p.m. when I looked out the window and saw the sky like this:

I'd never seen it quite like that before. Everything was so yellow! It was raining very lightly. The radar showed that we were just on the back edge of a rainy area that had apparently come up from the south but slid mostly to the east of us. In just a few minutes, the clouds started breaking up:

And that was it, except for a blast of wind. We only got a trace of rain. Thank goodness!

This last photo is marred a bit by the raindrop on my lens, but I thought it was kinda cool the way the flash colored the leaves yet everything in the background is black.

Just pretty

It came back!

The sun! It was so bright after so many dark, dreary days that it nearly hurt my eyes!

I took this next pic just a few minutes ago. I want to have something to look at when a new rainy spell sets in again on Tuesday. *SIGH*

Pretty sky

I thought the cloud formations this afternoon were kind of unusual. There were so many different combinations all at one time... must've been some funny air currents up there. (Click any to enlarge.)

The Last Sunset

Sounds like a movie title, doesn't it? But this is 'the last sunset of 2008', as it appeared just a little while ago.

Another lovely sunset last night!

It's too bad you can't view the pics side-by-side, with the bottom one on the right. Then you'd see that cloud mass and the sunset as a whole. Oh well... imagine it. ;-)

In the eye of the beholder

Late yesterday afternoon, a small storm system went through our area, and we were under tornado watches and warnings. The sky got really, really dark and there was a lot of rumbling going on. Fortunately, we didn't get anything out of it but rain.

Awhile later, I got an email from a friend who included these photos. This is what our storm looked like from her perspective... 70+ miles away! (Click on photos to enlarge.) Quite an awesome sight, huh?!

Isolated showers

A 20% chance of isolated showers and a tiny blip on the radar, and conditions can sure change fast. These clouds came out of "nowhere" and dumped nearly a half inch of rain on us last night. Because we had hay down again, I guess. :-(
