Fall foliage, part 3

Autumn is on the wane, folks. The weather's been grand (but is now getting colder), the colors have been spectacular (but have now mostly turned to brown), and we couldn't have asked for a lovelier season. It's hard to let go of it, but let go we must. I still have all my gorgeous photos to look at whenever I want to, though, and I thought I'd share one last round of them for you to enjoy, too. Here ya go!

The reds are my favorites, but the golds were awesome, too!

Misty morning prettiness

It had rained last Wednesday night, and Thursday morning it was rather foggy, yet the sun was trying to make its way through. I thought it made for some pretty pictures.  

Everything sparkled in the sun, and I tried to capture the sparkles. Here are my results.

Fall foliage, part 1

Here are 3 more shots from my fall colors photo shoot Wednesday morning. I'm sewing a project with a tight deadline, so have to be quick here.

Such amazing colors! And it was a good thing I took the pics when I did. The winds we had yesterday surely sent the leaves flying!

If a snake could be cute....

Okay, for any of you who don't like creepy-crawly things, that title should have forewarned you, so don't blame me....

Now, why would I say this snake is cute???

Because it's just a tiny baby, all coiled up! Look how little it is, compared with a leaf:

It was on the cement just outside our back garage door last evening. When I looked out again later, it had moved slightly....

But when I nudged it with the stem of that leaf, it stayed stiffly coiled up and just slid along. The cement was quite cold, so it must not have been able to move very easily. It was gone when I looked out again much later, though, so apparently it 'could' move. Or a cat got it.

Speaking of cats, Annabelle and Josie were in the window above, watching me take pics of the snake. I don't think they were too impressed.

All right, since I may have creeped you out by the photos above, here's something a little easier on the eyes. I spent some time in town yesterday morning taking pics of the fall foliage. The reds have just outdone themselves this year!

Aren't they gorgeous? I have many more photos, so I'll take you on a little tour next week. I'll spare you and won't show you all 86 that I took, though. :)

It's that time of year

Brrr... it's cold! And windy! And the forecast is for a freeze tonight. We know what's coming......

Fallness

Fall is definitely making its presence known. It seems like it wasn't that long ago (and it really wasn't) that we had a couple of days of 80°. But Friday morning we woke up to this:

Yep, that's ice. Brrr.

The trees are turning color, although this doesn't seem to be one of those years where everything is so brilliantly colored in our area. This ash tree is trying its best, though. Not bad, as far as ash trees go.

The leaves are dropping, too, very gradually so far.

Such a pretty time of year. I'm not quite ready for it to be so cold, though. And I sure don't like that 's' word I've seen in the forecast. I hope Indian Summer arrives soon and lasts a loooong time! The farmers need it, and especially some drier weather, to get the crops out of the fields.

More fall prettiness

Again, these are week+-old photos. So the trees are really looking pretty bare by now. But that's why we take pics... to preserve what we like to look at, right? This is what I saw on October 1st. We don't have anything that gets very red on our farm, but this year the green/gold combinations were lovely!

Look at how the leaves had fallen straight down in the pic below. That's rare around these parts. 

Of course by now they've blown all over the place, first from one direction and then the other. This was pretty while it lasted, though.

The asparagus has some lovely green/gold coloring, too. You can see a bit of it in the upper right corner of the photo above. Even my hostas got colorful. They also look pretty sad, though, because of the dry year. It's a good thing they're tough, because I didn't water them at all.

Remember the tree that got broken down because of the ice on it last winter? Here's what it looks like now (when I took the picture, that is):

Rather an odd shape, but its colors this year were probably the best it's ever had.

Below is the top of the maple tree a bit later. The wind was just beginning to pick up.

Now do you want to see something REALLY cool? My friend, LiEr, has been at a new project for quite some time. It's finally done. It's made out of wood. It's AWESOME! Go check out her little bake shop here! Her creativity blows me away!

Which way is north?

Just a little more fall prettiness....

But did you notice the moss on the tree trunk above? I thought moss was only supposed to grow on the north side of trees, and that's the south side. Here's another south view:

(That's a covered sandbox next to the tree, in case anyone's wondering. I kid that it's actually a tomb for all our deceased cats. ;) )

The moss is growing all the way around the trees (and it really showed up brightly after the rain). Now how am I ever going to know how to find my way around?!
