Rainbow did it again!

Yep, Rainbow had another litter, this time NOT in the garage, thank goodness. I think she had them during the night last Wednesday night, or she probably would've tried for the garage again. I'm kind of surprised she didn't bring them to the door the next morning.

I didn't know where they were, and I figured if they were outside they were probably doomed this late in the year. Out of curiosity, though, I watched to see where Rainbow went on Saturday evening, and I found the babies hidden in a somewhat sheltered spot in the ditch on the far side of our driveway. Four little beauties!

There are 3 females and a male (the orange one). It's really hard to hold them and take a picture at the same time. :)

I put them back and Rainbow quickly snuggled them up again. She's such a good mother.

Yesterday Courtney was here after school, and we were just going out to check on the babies when her mom drove in, so she came along and helped with our photo shoot. Isn't this an adorable little face?!

Two more adorable faces. :)

And another.

The babies are pretty good sized... a nice little handful.

Did you notice that cute little white paw? :)

They've been lucky that we're having above normal temperatures this week, so they're surviving okay. However, there's a chance of rain for tomorrow, so I must move them somewhere today. NOT into the garage, however. There really isn't a good place for them in the machine shed, and since Rainbow doesn't get along with the other adult cats, either, I guess I'll move them into an old hog barn that hasn't been used for years and is somewhat dilapidated. We'll see how that goes... and if Rainbow will leave them there. They still don't really stand much of a chance, being born this late, but we'll see how it goes. I hate to get too attached to them... but it's hard not to. But they are NOT coming into the garage!!

I guess an orange cat does not fit the same gender rules as a calico cat. Isn't it a little late in fall to be having kittens?

That's correct... as far as I know, it's only calicos that are always female. And yes, it's very late for new kittens. They don't stand much of a chance for surviving. :(

I did get them moved yesterday. Took a little convincing for Rainbow, but so far she's accepting the move and they're still there. Well, three of them... one had died before I got them moved. Not sure why, as it (the orange one) looked fine and was in the pile with the others. But maybe it had been on the outside edge overnight for too long and got too cold or something. Hard telling. Sad, but not surprising.
