Newport's York St. Cafe

We ate out at several different places while we were with Jess & Alex. The most interesting was the York St. Cafe. The food was great, and the walls were lined with shelves and shelves of memorabilia. It was fun to just sit and gaze at all the stuff.

The light fixture was kinda cool, too.

Here's some more 'stuff':

Alongside our table was another wall of shelved old stuff. Grandpa's eye caught sight of a "rhubarb extract" bottle. It eventually led to our getting acquainted with our very personable waiter who turned out to be originally from Minnesota, and he told us how much he'd enjoyed rhubarb as a kid and how he missed it because nobody raised it in Newport. Well, we just happened to have brought a whole bunch of it along for Jess & Alex... and that waiter was mighty surprised when Jess and Grandpa returned to the cafe with some of it for him later that afternoon. :)

That's really nice if them :)

And rhubard is SO delicious! In a "croustade" (I think it's a crumble in english..), in a pie, in a compote (on top of ice cream.. hmmmmm). It is so easy to grow, but here too, less people tend to have some in their backyard.

Oh, and the restaurant was really funny. I guess that when people go there, they try to sit at different spots every time, there are so many things to look at!

The only bad thing about rhubarb is that it takes so much sugar to overcome its tartness! ;)

Well, I can make that sacrifice from time to time :P (or too often ha!)

With berries, perhaps? ;) Rhubarb/strawberries are a good combination!

Such an excellent combination! I tried with apple last week and it was very good too (in a crumble.. once again haha)

I don't think I've ever heard of rhubarb and apples together! Might have to try that sometime.

The rhubarb crisp I made last week had apple in it. Good combo.
