Nap mat cover

Remember this picture I showed you a week ago? It was the supplies for my then-next sewing project. I bet you guessed what it was going to be, right?

It became this:

Yep, it was a mat cover, blanket, pillow and pillowcase for Courtney's nap mat... for KINDERGARTEN!! She's having her first day of school as I type. I've been thinking of her all morning, even as she got on that big ol' school bus at 7:15 a.m. I wonder how she's doing. I'll bet she's having a great time! I wonder how Mommy and Daddy are doing.....

Back to the sewing. I made it all in a day. That wasn't my intention, but other things kept getting in the way of my starting on it, and of course I kept thinking "It can't take that long to make." And of course it took longer than I thought it would. Okay, I hear you laughing!!! At least those of you who are regular readers and have heard me say that many times before. So that's how I spent my Labor Day... laboring. But it was a labor of love, and to me sewing isn't 'labor', anyway... I thoroughly enjoyed doing it. (I just wished I had started a little sooner.)

Here it is, all done. As you can see, the pillow is reversible. The print fabric is flannel, so she has a choice of which side she wants to sleep on.

Courtney needed it to take along to her teacher conference the next morning, so I delivered it as soon as I got it finished. She'd already had supper, a bath, and was ready for bed... but VERY wide awake. :)

The blanket is also reversible, like the pillow. Here she is, trying out the soft sides of both:

The blanket really is long enough to cover that foot. She just had it on sideways. :)

Now the other way:

She looks pretty happy with it, doesn't she? She was sooo excited that night that she was bouncing all over the place... new things for school, very first day of school coming soon, Grandma coming over... what more could a girl want? ;)

Then she had to practice undoing and redoing everything for nap time, and for those times it would need to come home from school for washing. She folded the blanket neatly:

Took the cover off the mat and put it back on, quite handily:

She even wanted to do the pillowcase:

That was successful, too!

Then came the big test... folding it all together and fastening the strap. Miss Independence did a great job without assistance!

Finally, she just had to offer up one of her lovely poses. :)

I found the tutorial for the mat cover here. That mat cover set is super cute! I didn't do any applique (although I'd had intentions before my time and fabric ran out), and I changed the design just a bit. I had the opening for the mat cover at the end instead of in the middle, deciding this would probably be the easiest way for her to get it on and off. I also went with one strap, which would make it easier to carry with one hand. I'm quite happy with how it turned out!

Sew.... what's next, you ask? I have some more sewing projects lined up. Nothing major, and nothing with a deadline, thankfully! Just some fun stuff. I'll show you later!

I could not figure out what the project was. We have never had to supply a nap mat before. Very cozy to have her Grandma with her at rest time!
