Mama's elusive babies

Saturday evening after supper, I noticed Mama kitty had one of her babies out on the deck steps. I'd seen this baby and another one in the machine shed before, but they were very wild and disappeared as soon as they saw me. Of course, as soon as I out got there with the camera, this little one took off again.

It eventually settled down, though, so I sneaked out with the camera again. This time it let me get a nice shot... from a distance, of course. It looks like its eyes are a bit sore, but nothing too bad.

I hung around for a bit, standing very still, and the other little one showed up, too! It was starting to get dark, so I had to use the flash, thus the weird-looking eyes.

He/she was pretty cautious at first, but eventually got braver and kept coming closer.

Then they started getting really playful and fun to watch.

"I'll show you how we can sneak up behind Mama and get her tail!"

"Just follow me..... "

Cute. I wonder why these two are so skittish? Is the mom also less friendly?

The mom is fairly tame, although when she showed up several years ago she was wild. It took a long time to get her to trust me enough to let me pet her. She had these kittens out 'somewhere', so they hadn't been around people until she brought them to the machine shed just over a week ago. Courtney and I have some work to do to get them tamed down... work that will require a LOT of patience! :)

BTW, this Mama is also Josie's mom, but Josie and her siblings were born nearby where we could get at them and handle them right away.

How you remember every kitty and family tree is impressive! How fun to watch the tiny fur balls grow up and turn into Mamas.

It's kind of like remembering your own kids' names, Becky. ;) Then again, once they're gone, they do start to fade from my memory, whereas my kids and their names would not!
